All sorts of words that once applied only to food and diets can now also apply to skin care. There’s vegan skin care, natural skin care, organic skin care, and so much more.

We can understand how it’s hard to keep all of them straight, much less know what works for your skin!

In this article, we’d like to break down organic skin care so you can understand what it is and — the big question — whether or not it works. Then we’ll tell you about a few skincare products made with certified organic ingredients and why we love them.

What Is Organic Skin Care?

First, let’s define the word “organic” in this context. While chemists tinkering in the lab would use the word differently, “organic” items (such as food and the ingredients in skincare products) are grown without the use of pesticides, hormones, and the like.

So, what makes skin care organic? There are a few different ways to look at it.

To wear the official USDA Organic seal, a skincare product has to be made of at least 95% organic material. However, even products that don’t quite earn the organic classification can be made with organic ingredients. That’s why we recommend always checking product labels!

The other factor is that some smaller companies can’t pay for the expensive USDA certification, so their products may be organic but are missing the official seal. Once again, check out the list of ingredients.

To sum up, organic skin care is just what it sounds like: skincare products made with ingredients that are organically grown.

But to fully understand what organic skin care is, it’s important to differentiate it from a couple of other terms you’ve probably heard.

Natural Skin Care

“Natural skin care” is not a regulated or technical term. That being said, it typically refers to products made with ingredients that come straight from nature, aka: plants.

What sort of botanical (plant) ingredients are used in skincare products?

And that’s just to name a few!

Vegan Skin Care

The word “vegan” applies to skin care in the same way that it applies to diets: no animal products or animal by-products allowed!

Why is this important? One reason is that the removal of animal products in skin care also gets rid of many of the questionable additives that typically go along with them.

Hint: Vegan skin care is not just for those who are sticking to an animal-free diet. You can be a meat-lover and still benefit from vegan skin care!

Cruelty-Free Skin Care

Vegan and cruelty-free are not always one and the same.

Cruelty-free simply means that a product and its ingredients were not tested on animals. A product can be vegan but not cruelty-free and vice versa.

Regardless of whether you’re opting for organic or vegan skin care, if you’re looking for cruelty-free products, all you have to do is — again — check your product’s label.

(Hint: All of our Babo Botanicals products are cruelty-free, so you can always feel good about using them for yourself or your family! Learn more about our testing standards in this article.)

Does Organic Skin Care Work?

The big question: Does organic skin care work? The short answer to this question is “yes.”

Skincare products that are certified organic or made with organic ingredients can do a wonderful job of cleaning, soothing, and moisturizing your skin! But something doesn’t work just because it’s organic.

Plus, here at Babo Botanicals, we think asking the “Does it work?” question isn’t enough. The other two questions we need to ask of our skincare products are: “Is it safe for my skin?” and “Is it safe for my body?”

This is where natural, organic products really shine! You want skincare products that will do their job without covering your skin and filling your body with all sorts of yucky ingredients.

Organic is a good place to start but doesn’t tell the whole story of what else might be in the product.

You’ll want to look for products that not only include organic ingredients but are also free of harmful or irritating ingredients.

Here are some ingredients to avoid:

  • SLS
  • Parabens
  • Phthalates
  • Silicone
  • Synthetic dye
  • Formaldehyde
  • Petroleum
  • Synthetic fragrances (parfum)

Stay away from the above list and instead opt for products with an ingredient list that you can read!

Go with products that are full of botanical ingredients like colloidal oats to soothe and protect sensitive skin; calendula to condition your skin; and avocado oil to provide your skin with omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants, and vitamins A, D, and E.
