2022 best home anti-aging, beauty & skincare devices round-up

I do real tests!

I’m soooo very bored of expensive creams and serums promising youth bestowing miracles and doing ZILCH. So, I test at-home anti-aging and skincare devices using various types of scientific sorcery. They say they can smooth, tighten and brighten, fade fine lines and wrinkles, and even lift saggy skin. But can they really?

Let’s find out with…

WeAreBodyBeautiful’s
best home anti-aging & skincare devices…

These are my favourite at home devices I’ve tested. There’s something from most tech categories here.

The Tripollar STOP VX Radio Frequency device is the only one that’s rejuenated AND tightened my underchin sag. But the power-house Flex MD LED kit is a serious CE cleared medical device for your entire body, for anti-aging and health concerns, acne, psoriasis, healing and pain relief too. It’s a new class of home device.

Or try a more affordable LED option for effortless healthy skin and glow with the CurrentBody Skin LED masks. Then there’s the mega pampering Mira-skin ultrasonic skincare boosting kit which seriously quenched and plumped my Mam’s 70-year-young skin. It’s perfect if you invest in good quality skincare. It delivers pain relief too when used with pain gels.

Of course, you can’t beat the Nuface Trinity microcurrent for super-healthy, dewy skin that certainly doesn’t act its age. (It tightens and lifts for some too). And to rejuvenate your crinkled peepers, try the simple and effective NIRA Skincare laser.

Last but not least, the TrophySkin MiniMD is a teeny, affordable, microdermabrasion wonder to smooooth and freshen tired complexions. It literally sucks the gunk off yer face.

Here’s a helpful comparison table to get you started. Then, read the full pros and cons round-ups below. Some have special deals or discount codes too.

This small, handheld device sends bipolar Radio Frequency current into your skin’s dermis layer. There, this RF current encounters resistance in your tissues which creates gentle heat. This heat tightens your collagen fibres, and stimulates fibroblast activity to gradually remodel the collagen & elastin structures in your skin. This tightens your skin and reduce wrinkles. The increased collagen also firms, plumps and brightens too.

And there’s also a Dynamic Muscle Activation (DMA) mode for use along the jawline. It’s called ELV in the US model. This is a mini Electro Muscle Stimulation (EMS) pulse working on your SMAS layer facial muscles, below the dermis and hypodermis. Tripollar say DMA strengthens muscles to build volume and tone, and works with the RF to enhance lift and contouring along your jawline. Phew!

Use it with Tripollar or CurrentBody RF preparation gel.

The Tripollar STOP VX kit

I’ve been keen to test the STOP VX because it can tighten sagging chin. And that’s what I want. The latest STOP VX skin tightening device combines their 2nd generation RF and DMA. This basically means it’s more efficient and faster than the older models. So, I tested it over 3+ months. I love my results and I highly recommend this device. Keep reading to learn why.

Ease of use

The mains-power STOP VX device is small, lightweight and with an attractive geometric design. It’s robust and well-made, simple to operate, and comfy enough to manoeuvre around your face and neck. Use it with the thick and sticky Tripollar or CurrentBody RF prep gels. They have quite a strong scent, but you need just a few dabs and it doesn’t dry out.

Set-up and equipment for my comfy evening STOP sessions

The STOP VX model has larger RF electrode nobbles than older versions, and these work faster to heat your skin to the target temperature.

RF current varies between 1MHz and 1.25 MHz. Tripollar call it Multi-RF.

The RF routine is simple with slow, adjacent circles all over your skin until it reaches temperature shown by the orange light and beep. First, using a foundation brush, paint on a thin layer of the gel. Then warm each treatment area for 4 to 5 minutes each. For the DMA routine, slowly swipe along your jawline for 5 mins each side.

The RF routine is simple and easy to remember. It’s like the soothing, massaging circles. And I love the warming sensation. The DMA in contrast feels like teeny pinpricks in short pulses. It’s an odd sensation, and it can pull your lips if too close to your mouth. But I find it totally bearable on HIGH level. Skin is red/pink and plumped afterwards, and feels invigorated. This fades gradually, but the next day it’s super-smooth!

Once you’re finished, give the STOP VX a wipe and wash the gel off your face. Follow with your serums and moisturiser. Or a hydrating and cooling sheetmask feels pretty awesome too.

Effort & results

The STOP VX is a high effort device. It demands discipline and commitment during the start-up stage.

Use it two or three times per week for six to eight weeks. Each RF and DMA session takes 30 to 35 minutes for full face and neck. I set aside a quiet, unrushed hour every other evening. It’s a pleasant, wind-down routine before bed and you can do it as you watch TV too.

TIP: stick to the recommended treatment times and plan because too much RF could overheat your skin, causing dehydration and/or other side effects.

Tripollar say the STOP significantly reduces fine lines and wrinkles, plumps and lifts saggy skin, improves skin texture, improves muscle volume, and tones your jawline area. From user feedback (and my trial) you can also add refines pores and gives a radiant glow! You may see all these changes, or just a few and of varying impact too. Some see and feel fresher, smoother and plumper skin after just a few sessions. But results build gradually so wait at least six weeks to see significant changes.

Take a before and after photo to compare how your skin changes.

I love my results from the STOP VX. I have healthy, radiant, supple and hydrated skin. It’s exceptionally smooth and plumper, especially on my forehead and under eyes. But the key thing for me is it has tightened the loose skin under my chin👇

Psssst…See my full Tripollar STOP user trial diary and more before vs after photos.

After six to eight weeks, you can drop the frequency to once a week, or once every 2 weeks as you see fit. And in my experience, these less frequent ongoing sessions work to maintain results. 🥳

The Negatives

There are a few negatives to consider with the STOP VX.

First, a full face and neck session is rather time-consuming. So, expect a high effort start-up stage which demands commitment. But it gets much easier after this because it’s one of the lowest effort for maintenance sessions. Plus, it’s very pleasant and easy to do watching TV.

Second, the angular shape could be a little comfier. But it’s not such a big deal with the VX because your done before it gets too tiring.

Next, there’s not much evidence supporting the effect and results for DMA mode. So, the benefit is questionable. If this irks you (as it does me) you could instead consider the slightly cheaper STOP X with fast RF, but without DMA mode.

You should also bear in mind that, while the earlier original STOP models with single-RF are clinically proven, the STOP VX and X with Multi-RF, aren’t. Other clinical studies show multiple RF frequencies work better combined, but this explains why there are no advertised differences in speed or depth of results between models. However, all the Tripollar models have FDA-clearance which means they are safe.

Then there’s the Tripollar prep gel costs around £30 for 50ml. That’s expensive considering it’s just glycerin and salt with a bit of added scent. CurrentBody offer a slightly better value alternative at £30 for 100ml. Regardless, you don’t need a lot so the gel lasts for ages. After 3 months I’ve used a little more than half my Tripollar gel.

And finally, the STOP VX is pricey, one of the most expensive devices I’ve tested. For that I want a long and reassuring money back guarantee. But there isn’t one. Boo. There are cheaper options in the STOP X, STOP V and Classic but still without guarantees.

Tripollar STOP VX summary

STOP VX premium & pricey, but effective

Here’s a quick summary round-up of my test scores, and pros and cons for the Tripollar Stop VX:

Ease of use 👍👍👍👍
Requires a sticky conductive gel. Easy RF sessions, pleasant warming sensation. Temperature sensor protects skin from overheating, DMA mode feels like teeny pinpricks but is totally bearable. Use morning or night, can watch TV. No pain or irritation. Leaves skin invigorated, red/pink & plump, which fades quickly.

Effort 💧💧💧💧
A high-effort device with 2 to 3 sessions per week for 6 to 8 weeks. RF takes max. 25 mins plus 10 mins DMA = 35 mins. Then, a much more manageable maintenance plan with sessions either weekly, or 1 every 2 weeks.

Results ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Skin feels smoother & firmer after just a few sessions. Collagen & elastin slowly rebuild to smooth, firm & brighten your skin, softening wrinkles & fine lines too. Skin also gradually tightens for lift around the chin, jaw & eyes. Best results after 6 to 8 weeks maintained with regular top-ups.

Pros

  • Simple routine, painless & pleasant warming sensation
  • Leaves skin invigorated
  • Gel lasts aaaages
  • & lower cost gel alternatives available too
  • Compact & lightweight
  • Low effort maintenance schedule
  • Single-RF models are clinically proven
  • CE certified & FDA-cleared

Cons

  • It’s expensive
  • Very sticky prep gel
  • No money back guarantee
  • High up-front effort during start-up
  • No clinical data for DMA/ELV
  • No clinical data showing how much better Multi-RF is

The Flex MD is a large, bendy LED panel made by experts Dermalux. The panel houses 360 LEDs of three clinically proven colours; blue 415nm, red 633nm and near infrared (NIR) 830nm. You can use any single or combination of wavelengths during a session. Use the canopy around your head, face and neck, or lay it flat against your skin on other body areas.

Medical & professional Flex MD LED kit by Dermalux

The photons in these specific light wavelengths do special things in your cells with a process called photobiomodulation.

The red (633nm) and NIR (830nm) wavelengths reach different depths where they reduce inflammation, boost blood flow, and energise the mitochondria power generator organelles in our cells. This kickstarts collagen and elastin production, to calm, heal, refresh, hydrate and brighten your skin. They build gentle heat to relieve muscular and joint pain too.

Blue wavelength (415nm) controls sebum, destroys bacteria including acne causing bacteria, and calms other bacterial conditions for improved skin clarity and health.

Learn more about how the different light wavelengths work here.

The Flex MD LED light therapy kit from Dermalux

The Flex MD is an exceptional home device. That’s because Dermalux proprietary LED tech is much more stable, precise and powerful than rivals. It’s clinically proven to kick-start significant biochemical changes in our skin. So much so, it’s the only home device CE medically certified to treat acne, heal wounds, psoriasis and relive pain. Therefore, it’s extra fast and effective versus rival home LED devices for anti-aging concerns too!

Dermalux LEDs and tech are superior to standard cosmetic LEDs & devices

If you’re curious, you can learn more about the Flex MD tech and how it outperforms all other home LED devices here. But I’ve also experienced first-hand what it does. I tested it for 5 weeks. Frankly, it’s nuts how quick it works and how much healthier my skin is. True, it’s wincingly expensive, but I reckon it’s a truly wicked investment.

Ease of use

The mains-power, body-safe triple layer grey foam panel is robust, durable, and surprisingly bendy. A wipe-clean transparent cover protects the neat network of 360 LED lights. You must be close to a power outlet, or have an extension cable handy. It’s simple to set-up and easy to select and control the lights via the small controller. The lights auto switch-off after 30 minutes.

Blue, red & NIR multi-wave treatment – my fave.

Use the LED panel as a canopy for treating your scalp, face and neck. Alternatively, lay it flat against your skin on your chest, back, tummy and other body areas.

First, wash & dry your face. Then, check which combo of lights you need using the treatment protocols sheet. Set up the lights using the controller, get comfy under the canopy, and start the lights.

Each facial session under the canopy takes 30 minutes. Just lay back and relax. You can take a silent meditative rest 💤, listen to the radio, music, audio book or a podcast.

For body areas, lay the LED panel directly on your skin and reduce the session time to 20-minutes (because it’s so much closer to your skin). I watch a few episodes as I treat my decolletage, tummy and legs. Set a timer and stop it manually after 20-minutes.

You can watch TV as you treat your body areas or listen to music, podcasts or audio books or simply relax during facial sessions

It’s pleasantly warm and soothing under the lights. And they’re super bright, but the opaque goggles are excellent at shielding your eyes. Your skin can turn pink because of the increased blood flow. But besides that, it doesn’t get too hot, there’s no stinging, pain, or unpleasant skin reactions either.

If you have the space, once you’re done, leave it all assembled on a bed (turn it off at the mains) or pack it away into the box or storage bag. Finally, apply your favourite skincare.

Effort & results

The Flex MD is rather time-intensive, especially if you treat multiple body areas. It’s 30 minutes for your face, and an additional 20 minutes per body area. But it’s very easy and just a little effort. Use it at any time of the day. I choose a relaxing, winddown, evening routine.

Time-intensive, but easy & very little effort

Do twelve frequent sessions per area, 3 to 5 times per week. Then reduce them as you need to maintain your results. And despite the considerable time commitment, it’s easy to stick with because results appear fast.

Some feel the difference after just one session. Typically, you’ll see soothed, brighter, hydrated, and healthier skin after just two or three sessions. You may see a noticeable change the day after a session. And the results just keep getting better.

Skin gradually smooths, firms, and rehydrates, pores shrink, scars, fine lines, pigmentation, spider veins and redness fade, so you’ve a healthy radiant glow instead. Breakouts, inflammation, dryness, and psoriasis calm and heal, and thin, delicate, and vulnerable skin rebuilds and strengthens.

Complete all twelve sessions quickly to see your best results. Continue if you like, or alternatively two or three maintenance sessions per week is usual to maintain your new heathy skin. And if you need an extra calming or rejuvenating boost, do three daily sessions in a row 👌.

👉 As with all home beauty tech, results vary by individual. Your lifestyle, overall skin health and skin condition severity determine the breadth and depth of results. And how frequently you need maintenance sessions too. That said, this sophisticated LED kit is capable of some serious skin lovin’ which other devices simply can’t match ❤.

💡 Take a before and after photo to compare how your skin changes.

I use the Flex MD with red and NIR for general antiaging, and sometimes red, NIR and blue if I feel a few pesky spots. I did four or five sessions per week for three weeks, then dropped to 2 per week. And now I’m hooked on the Flex MD.

My skin is incredibly healthy, hydrated, smooth, and bright. It’s plumper, firm and supple, everywhere. It clears skin bumps and blemishes fast, and, more gradually fades pigmented areas too. I love these results. It’s my skin and face, but like in a CGI-enhanced flashback. It’s fresh, revitalized, and visibly younger.

See for yourself in my before and after 5 weeks photo comparison…

After 5 weeks of red, NIR and blue LED light therapy sessions with the Dermalux Flex MD.

You can see more Flex MD comparison photos here.

I’m also a bit klutzy and the skin on my shins is very thin, so I also use the Flex MD to fade leg bruises and other boo-boos in double-quick time.

The Negatives

The Flex MD is very special. But there are a few negatives to consider.

First, it’s rather a large piece of kit. And although it’s portable in the storage bag, it’s not practical if you travel frequently. Also, it’s ideal if you can leave it assembled on a spare bed when not in use. Otherwise, for each session you must pack it in and out of the storage bag or box. It’s a bit of a faff but is super important to protect this very expensive investment!

Second, it is time intensive. Each 30-minute facial session is a good excuse to simply relax, listen to podcasts or audio books you’d normally not make time for. But if you rarely have any spare time, you may prefer another device that’s easier to fit in.

Next, it’s easy to accidentally pause or turn off the lights with the controller. That’s because it’s capacitive (it senses your skin) and you don’t have to physically touch it to alter the controls. But there’s an easy fix. Simply place the controller next to the canopy, within reach but safely away from your hands.

Also, – it’s a small gripe – but the mains cable could be a bit thicker and more supple. It’s not such a big deal because the panel doesn’t move in use, but if it matched the quality of the LED panel it’d be perfect.

And finally, the Flex MD is seriously expensive at £1,895 😳. (If it’s too much and you’re set on light therapy, try the CurrentBody Skin LED masks next in this list). But if you have the cash, I think it’s well worth it. That’s because of the precise, stable and powerful LED tech, versatile panel design for whole-body use, CE medical certification, multi-tasking treatments, and the unmatched, fast and healthy skin results.

Compared other LED face masks, panels and devices on offer, I think the Flex MD is remarkable. It’s a new class of home-use device and I’m confident it’s the best home LED kit you can buy.

Dermalux Flex MD LED kit summary

The Dermaulx Flex MD is a big investment, but well worth it.

Here’s a quick summary round-up of my test scores, and pros and cons for the Flex MD:

Ease of use 👍👍👍👍👍
Easy to set-up, hands-free and very bright! 30 minutes complete horizontal downtime under the canopy for your face & neck, use the goggles. Read or watch TV and lay the durable LED panel flat over your body bits for 20 minutes per area. With handy treatment protocols reference chart to match to your skin concerns.

Effort 💧
Time-intensive, but zero effort sessions. Three to five 30-minute facial sessions per week, or 20-minutes per body area. Do twelve sessions for an intensive anti-aging or healing course. Then regular top-up sessions as you need them. Or do a sequence of three daily sessions to calm and kickstart your skin as you need it.

Results ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
A fast & impressive multi-tasker which soothes, heals, rejuvenates & perfects, relives musculoskeletal aches & pains, and fights acne & other bacterial conditions too. Skin visibly perks-up or calms after each session. Results build gradually but significantly over the intensive course.

The CurrentBody Skin wearable LED light therapy tech comes in a flexible full-face mask, and separate neck and décolletage perfector. They each have many light emitting diodes (LEDS) of both red and near infra-red light held next to your skin.

Light therapy works by a process called Photobiomodulation

These photons in these specific light wavelengths boost blood flow and energise the mitochondria power generator organelles in our cells. The process is called photobiomodulation.

This perks-up all your cells, including fibroblasts which build more and stronger collagen and elastin. This gradually heals and refreshes your skin. With regular use it’s clinically proven to reduce facial lines, improve texture and pigmentation for younger looking, healthier skin. Use with an optional Hydrogel Face Mask for enhanced skin hydration too.

✔ Reduces inflammation
✔ Boosts blood flow
✔ Faster cell metabolism & so more ATP energy
✔ More antioxidants & detoxifies cells
✔ More & stronger collagen & elastin

The Current Body Skin LED mask kit

Ease of use

The LED masks are a flexible, soft and durable, white silicone. They’re light and comfortable to wear, secured with soft Velcro straps. The mask moulds around your face with all the holes in the right place. And the long-lasting battery power means you’re not stuck next to a power socket. Each charge lasts around 20 uses. They’re straightforward to get going because there’s just a single button to operate them and they auto shut-off once the time is up.

Soft, flexible & strong silicone moulds to your face so the LEDs have maximum effect.
Comfy & the easiest to use

First wash and dry your face. Then, simply choose a comfy spot then secure the mask with the Velcro strap, sit back, and chillax! There are no routines or techniques to learn. It requires zero concentration, and not even your hands! Take 10-minutes whilst relaxing, reading, watching TV, or even meditating. This is the easiest option out there, done in a jiffy.

Watch TV, read or squidge your dog!

There’s no heat or pain, and no skin reactions after either. However, the lights are bright so it’s probably not for light sensitive eyes. Once you’re done, wipe down the mask with a damp cloth to keep it clean, and apply your favourite skincare.

TIP: You can lay the masks flat over any body part you desire for a rejuvenating 10-minute session.

Effort vs results

The CurrentBody Skin LED mask and Neck & Dec Perfector take a little time, but are very low effort.

Bright, but effortless. Hands-free. Lazy.

Use them three to five times a week for at least four weeks. Do it at any time of the day when you have a spare 10 minutes. It needs little motivation. And although there are other devices which demand less weekly treatment time, none are hands-free or so little faff as these.

To maintain your results, use as frequently as you need. I do at least 2 or 3 maintenance session per week, sometimes more if my skin’s a bit tired and dehydrated.

CurrentBody say it softens fine lines & wrinkles, reduces inflammation, smooths texture, firms, tones & rehydrates skin, and fades pigmentation.

You may see all these changes or just a few, and they can vary in impact too. Some see and feel fresher, smoother and brighter skin after just a few sessions. But results build gradually. So, give it at least four weeks to see noticeable changes.

💡 Take a before and after photo to compare how your skin changes.

The mask also partners very well with at-home microcurrent sessions. So, I added it to my microcurrent routine to test it. I do a relaxing 10-minute mask session before my evening microcurrent session. I’ve done this 5 days per week for 4 weeks.

Microcurrent gave me incredibly healthy and beautifully hydrated, supple skin. So, I wasn’t sure it could get better.

But it has.

Here are my comparison photos after 4 weeks of using the CurrentBody Skin LED mask combined with microcurrent:

Even perkier and bright skin after 4 weeks of the CurrentBody Skin LED mask

My skin is perkier still! It’s even smoother with further refined pores. It has also plumped-out and faded my forehead lines, being most noticeable immediately after the LED mask. My under-eye area is thicker and brighter, so the fine lines aren’t as noticeable anymore. And boy is my skin BRIGHT 🤩. The colour is deeper and more unified, and there’s a vibrancy to it too.

Psssst…See more before vs after photos from my CurrentBody Skin LED mask trial.

The Negatives

There are a few negatives to share about the masks.

It’s bright, baby.

First, as mentioned earlier, the lights are bright. So, you may need to close your eyes during the session which means 10 minutes complete downtime. But if you can bear it, your eyes adjust quickly. I find it most comfortable watching TV.

Second, the face mask is difficult to move around in because it restricts your visibility, and movement causes the lights to flicker and sometimes even disconnect.

I use my ponytail to position the mask without an extra Velcro top strap

Next, a few reviewers share the mask is an awkward fit, too tight in places and gaps in others. Current Body can help here with additional Velcro straps for a better fit and comfort. And note, if your upper lip is a problem area there are no lights directly on this spot, although the surrounding light does reach there. It’s not a trouble spot for me yet so I can’t say how effective it is!

Also, the mask is expensive and it may be beyond your budget. You can choose a cheaper, hand-held LED device. They still work. However, they can’t treat your entire face in 10 minutes or give results within 4 weeks. So, if you can afford them, I think the CurrentBody masks are well worth the additional cash. And they run regular promotions and bundles too.

And finally, there’s no reassuring money back guarantee. It’s a bummer, but I still think this mask is an awesome choice because of the ease, comfort, durability and results.

Easy to put on and simple to operate with a close-but-comfortable fit. Light is bright but not irritating, it’s pain-free. And as it’s hands-free too you can easily watch TV, surfda interwebs or read during the quick sessions.

Effort 💧💧
Three to five 10-minute easy hands-free sessions per week for at least 4 weeks. Continue, or reduce frequency according to your skin’s needs. For ongoing use.

Results
Collagen and elastin build over 4 to 6 weeks to brighten, tighten and smooth skin. Wrinkles and fine lines then gradually soften. Gives an even, healthy, glowing complexion.

  • Durable, comfortable & pain-free
  • Zero-faff treatments
  • Light-weight & portable (so good for travel)
  • No ongoing cost of gels or replacement bits

The Mira-skin kit is a home version of phonophoresis facials available in professional beauty spas and aesthetic clinics. It’s safe for all skin tones and types, for women and men. Use the ultrasound wand with the actives-packed serum and water-based conductive gel on your face, neck and décolletage. For an extra plumping treat use the ultrasound boost with a Mira-skin sheet mask.

I’d never heard of it. And I didn’t think much of it at first glance either. Because it looks rather grown-up and serious. But it also promises serious skin-plumping results like no other.

This is what it does:

#1 The ultrasound waves create gentle heat, increasing blood flow, nutrient supply and detoxing your skin cells. So, you get all-round healthier skin. And your fibroblasts perk-up, building stronger collagen and elastin, gradually repairing and refreshing your skin.

#2 It’s designed to boost absorption of your skincare using a therapeutic process called phonophoresis. This is where special ultrasound waves open microscopic pathways in your skin. This gets more of those nourishing, anti-aging molecules deep into your skin where they can work harder. And give significant results.

👉 #3 And this is how it plumps your skin. The Mira-skin serum and sheet masks are jam-packed with Hyaluronic Acid. Now, as you age, you make less of this water-binding molecule so your skin loses volume, becomes dry and wrinkled. But the Mira-skin wand and skincare deeply replenishes your lost Hyaluronic Acid. It literally refills it. Plumps-it-up for juicy, bouncy skin. And it’s the only home device to give you this youthful, filler-effect.

So, I just had to put it to the test (and on my 70-years young Mam no less).

Ease of use

The Hyaluronic Serum has a pleasant rose scent and slips easily over your skin before sinking in. It feels premium and fast became my Mam’s preferred serum. Use it at least once a day, and with the ultrasound wand one or two times a week.

Use the Mira-skin Hyaluron serum daily. You get a small 15ml tester in the standard starter kit.

The ultrasound wand is cordless, compact, lightweight, robust and comfortable to hold. The materials are superb quality with a surgical-grade stainless steel treatment head. It’s super-simple to operate and intuitive to manoeuvre. A single battery charge lasts several weeks.

Small but mighty Mira-skin ultrasound boosting wand.

The routine is fast and simple with slow swipes over all your skin in soothing, smooth glides. First apply the serum all over. Then, apply the gel in sections so it doesn’t dry out. Start on the left and glide three times over each area of your neck, jawline and chin, cheeks and forehead. Then repeat on the other side.

The conductive gel is thick and doesn’t drip or sting your eyes. Have a wipey-towel handy to keep your hands clean and remove the excess gel at the end.

It’s easy to remember, soothing and calming. There’s no sensation from the ultrasound and no skin reactions either. It quickly became a pampering evening ritual my Mam looks forward to.

Use the ultrasound wand with the Mira-skin product and/or your own favourites.

Your skin stays extra absorbent for up to 30 minutes after the ultrasound. So, remember to apply your own skincare products during this time.

Effort & results

The Mira-skin system demands much less time and commitment than rival devices. And the ongoing low-effort routine doesn’t change, so it quickly becomes habit.

Use the serum as part of your daily skincare routine. And combine with the ultrasound boost one or two times each week. Each ultrasound session takes between 5 to 10 pampering minutes. Pick a quiet, unrushed evening each week to spoil yourself.  It helps your skin’s natural overnight rejuvenation too. And it’s for ongoing use.

IMPORTANT: Don’t use the ultrasound wand more than 10 minutes per treatment and no more than 3 times a week as it can tire your facial muscles for the opposite effect.

💡 Taking a before and after photo really helps to compare how your skin visibly changes over the weeks.

Mira-skin say the serum and ultrasound boost gives you glow, hydrates, plumps & smooths skin, reduces fine lines & wrinkles, and fades age spots, redness and pigmentation. You may see some benefits more than others.

Most feel quick hydration and relief from dryness with the daily serum application and just a few ultrasound boosts. Then, over the next month or two, Hyaluronic Acid, collagen and elastin build in your skin for noticeably plumper, smoother, supple and glowing results. My 70-something year old Mam tested it over several months and saw excellent results, improving with continued use.

Here are her comparison photos.

After 6 months of using the Mira-skin ultrasound skincare booster with the Mira-skin Hyaluronic Acid serum.

And if you have more pamper time, try a mega-quenching 15- to 20-minute Mira-skin facial mask +ultrasound boost. Use it weekly, every few weeks or monthly. The plumping, hydrating effect of this sheet mask with ultrasound is immediately noticeable.

And after a Miramask & ultrasound boost facial. Beautiful.

The Negatives

There are a few things to mention here.

First, the gel’s a bit messy. It’s easily solved with a cosmetic brush to keep your hands clean.

Second, it’s so pampering you’ll want to use it more often. Seriously. But don’t do more than three sessions per week as this can tire your facial muscles for the opposite effect.

Expensive, but totally worth the investment.

And finally, the gels, serum and masks are quite expensive. So, it’s reassurring Mira-skin say you can use any quality anti-aging serum with the ultrasound boost – I love this freedom to experiment. However, I also feel their serum is absolutely worth the cost (50ml 139/$139 lasts 3 months). That’s because the clinical study shows impressive results as does our user test. The masks are especially potent too.

Mira-skin ultrasound skincare booster summary

Here’s a quick summary round-up of my test scores, and pros and cons for the Mira-skin kit:

SPECIAL BUNDLE DEAL 👇

Buy any Nuface device and add a

CurrentBody Skin LED Illuminating Mirror for just £39.99

The Nuface Trinity microcurrent device is FDA-cleared and safe for all skin tones and types, for use on the face and neck with a water-based conductive gel. It’s suitable for both men and women, but men must be clean-shaven for it to work. There are both large and small microcurrent attachments, and a LED wrinkle reducer attachment too.

👉 Note: the attachments don’t fit the smaller Nuface mini microcurrent device.

The microcurrent mimics the bioelectricity in your body. This energises tissues on neck and face making them smoother, tight and supple for a healthier and younger appearance.

How does it work?

As we age, our bodies create less of a vital molecule called ATP (adenosine triphosphate). ATP fuels cell processes all through-out your body. This includes building collagen and elastin which repair and refresh your skin keeping it young. Therefore, less ATP is sad times.

Our bodies create ATP using natural bioelectricity in our cells (learn more on microcurrent here). And this is how the Trinity helps. The gentle microcurrent circulates in your skin and is so similar to your body’s own, your cells use it to create ATP. This increased ATP boosts metabolism, flushes out toxins and builds collagen and elastin.

Gentle microcurrent at maximum 400 μA (micromps) leaves the massaging spheres and travels throughout your facial tissues to boost ATP production.

With frequent use you build and store more ATP in your skin.  So gradually, sluggish unhealthy aged cells wake-up and shake-up for a healthier, fresher-faced you. Happy times.

Ease of use

The device is cordless, small but weighty, robust, curvy and ergonomic. It’s very simple to operate and the battery life is excellent, lasting 2 weeks of daily use. A series of soothing glides and holds make-up the routines. Treat one side of your neck/face in zones, then repeat on the right. Move to the next position with each 5-second beep.

For areas the big-balls trainer attachment can’t reach, there’s the ELE attachment.

The routines are very easy to remember. The App needs updating though because the follow-along video tutorials don’t match the recommended basic and advanced routines, or include the neck glides and holds.

I love the indulgent, cooling, soothing glides of the spheres over my skin. There’s virtually no sensation from the microcurrent but you do get five intensities to choose from just in case. It can zing on spots and leave a slight metallic taste too. But there are no uncomfortable skin reactions from the sessions.

The rather nice but expensive Nuface gels – more about them here.

The Nuface gels are excellent because they don’t drip or sting your eyes, and the leave-on formulas feel beautiful massaged in afterwards. Overall, it’s pampering and relaxing, but not to be rushed. If you love a bit of indulgent self-care, it’s right up your street.

Effort & results

The Nuface Trinity demands discipline and is a high-effort device. So, consider if it suits your lifestyle best. Choose the basic (5 mins) or advanced (around 20 mins) routines with the trainer attachment. Add in the ELE attachment and it’s about another 10 minutes on top. Treat 5 days a week for the first 60 days. If you see good results and are happy, switch to 2 or 3 sessions per week to maintain your results.

Nuface say the Trinity can tighten, lift & contour, shrink pores, firm & smooth skin, depuff eye bags, lift eyebrows & hooded eyes, fade fine lines & wrinkles. You may have all or only a few of these results. And although some people see immediate skin tightening, results build gradually over time. 60 days is the suggested time-frame to see noticeable results.

Our tester saw excellent results overall, to varying degrees by problem area. Nuface suggest you continue with 5 sessions per week indefinitely to enhance your results.

The negatives

There are a few negatives with the Trinity. As mentioned above, it’s high-effort during start-up and maintenance. Plus, it may take longer than the suggested start-up phase to get your desired results. If you can’t commit, it’s probably not for you.

Further expense for the ELE & LED attachment. Read the full review to learn why I don’t like the LED attachment.

Next, the Nuface gels are expensive too. You can learn about gel tips and alternatives here. Then there’s more expense to consider too, because whilst Trinity deals are decent value, you must add another £125 to £142 each for the ELE and LED attachments. (And I don’t rate the latter either – learn why in the full review). So, if you need extra help with wrinkles, brows, hooded eyes and lip lines, bear this extra cost in mind.

Nuface Trinity Microcurrent summary

SAGGY EYE-BAGS!

They make me look old and tired. Disguising them with make-up is a skill I lack because it inevitably pools in the haphazard network of fine lines, looking ten times worse than before. Ugh. So…

Option 1: stop looking in mirrors

Option 2: smile constantly, scrunching them out of sight.

Option 3: give the NIRA Skincare laser a whirl.

What’s the NIRA Skincare laser, you say?

The NIRA Skincare laser is safe for all skin tones and types, for women and men. It’s a non-ablative non-fractional laser that’s FDA-cleared safe and effective for use at home. It zaps teeny laser pulses, perfect to cover crow’s feet, under eye wrinkles and bags, and other small lined or wrinkled facial areas. You don’t need any gels or extra attachments to use it (but you must moisturise afterwards!)

This is how it works. Water in your lower skin layer (dermis) absorbs the infrared laser beams and creates heat. The laser precisely controls this heat so it won’t damage your skin cells or cause pain. But it is hot enough to trigger your skin’s healing response. This means your fibroblasts build stronger collagen and elastin, which supports and regenerates your skin so it gradually perks up. With daily use, the result is firmer, supple skin, and smoothed away fine lines and wrinkles.

“Holy Dalmatian!” said I. I’ve got to try this. So, I did. And now I’ll share all about it so you can decide if it’s right for you. Here’s a quick summary of how I score it, the pros and cons, followed by more detail and photos.

Ease of use 👍👍👍👍 ½
Very easy to use little cordless device with excellent battery life. No gels needed. Super-simple routine over crow’s feet and under eye area, or other small wrinkled surfaces. Quick, hot sensation that’s totally bearable with no skin reactions or irritation.

Effort 💧
Low effort routine for ongoing daily use. Takes just a few minutes either morning or night. Quickly becomes habit and easy to fit in.

Results ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Smooths and firms gradually so you see wrinkles and lines fading around 60 days in, and best results after 90 days. Tightens and refreshes for healthy, supple skin.

Pros

  • Can get right up to lower eye lid to zap every single wrinkle
  • No faffy gels or other expensive consumables
  • Lightweight & compact so good if you travel
  • Test it out with a 60-day money back guarantee
  • Clinically proven, CE certified & FDA-cleared

Cons

  • Teeny, precise pulses too time-consuming for full face & neck treatments
  • It’s expensive
  • Can dry thin, delicate skin – use a Hyaluron serum followed with a good moisturiser!

Ease of use

Small & lightweight NIRA laser with a long-lasting battery

The rechargeable laser is small, lightweight, a bit plasticy but decent enough quality. Inside is a solid-state diode laser. Besides sounding fancy, this means there are no moving parts, so there’s less that can fail or break. Each battery charge lasts ages, around 4 weeks of daily use. And NIRA say it has no pulse or recharge limits, therefore it’ll last many years of zaps. NIRA Skincare give a 1-year warranty (meh), but CurrentBody.com has that beat with their extended 2-year warranty.

Press the power button to cycle through the 5 intensity levels

The laser is very straightforward to operate with just a power button and a pulse button. And the routine is simple. Just place the nose flush against your skin and cover it in fast, adjacent pulses. The device beeps at the start and end of each pulse to let you know it’s working.

You need an up-close mirror for precise zappage under your eye.

It’s very easy. You need precision but not a lot of brain-power. Each pulse gives a small, brief, hot sensation. I find level five intensity is totally bearable and pain-free. My skin is sometimes pink afterwards but it fades within a few minutes and there’s no other irritation. Don’t forget to help nourish and heal afterwards with Nira Skin’s or your own favourite Hyaluronic serum and moisturiser on top!

Effort & results

This little laser is easy to commit to. It has the quickest sessions so, despite needing daily use, it’s one of the lowest effort devices overall and doesn’t feel like a chore. Plus, the ongoing routine doesn’t change so it quickly becomes habit too.

NIRA suggest you need 40 pulses per undereye area, taking about 2 minutes. This is about right. You don’t need to be super-precise because you’ll cover any missed bits in your next sessions.

NIRA say you can use the laser twice a day – morning and night – to see faster results. However, I caution against this if your skin is thin, crêpey and delicate. I found it too much for my skin which felt dehydrated despite moisturising. So, be patient and stick with once a day. You’ll still see the same results, it just takes a little longer to get there.

Just a few easy minutes either morning or night for asoother, firmer under-eye

TIP: Taking a before and after photo really helps to compare how your skin visibly changes over the weeks.

NIRA say the laser builds collagen and elastin gradually, so after around 2 months your skin is noticeably brighter, firmer and smoother. That means faded and softened crow’s feet. Under-eye bags tighten, fine lines and wrinkles fade and soften. You’ll see your best results after 3 months with younger looking eyes. You may see subtle or more significant change because results vary by individual. Keep going to maintain your results.

Negatives

Thankfully, the NIRA laser doesn’t sting or cause burning red skin. So, you don’t need a will of steel to keep going. But don’t expect to use it for entire face and neck rejuvenation. The laser aperture is teeny and takes too long and oodles of concentration to cover such large areas. Instead, try a home Radio Frequency device for similar collagen building effects also using dermal heat.

Tiny things come in expensive packages (so it seems).

The main negative with the NIRA laser is it’s expensive at RRP £299/$399. And this does seem a little steep. Especially compared to rival devices using alternative technology which quickly treat your full face and neck.

However, most of these can’t beat the NIRA laser as an effective, specialist tool for eye wrinkles. That’s because it zaps right up to the lower lid letting no wrinkles escape. And it gives longer-lasting results than other technologies such as microcurrent. You can learn more in the full NIRA laser review. But if you’re still unsure, you can test it out to see if it’s worth it with a reassuring 60-day money back guarantee from CurrentBody.com and NIRA Skin.

So, will you try the NIRA Skincare laser for younger looking eyes? It’s rather good for shaving a few years off. If you will, please shop via my links when you’re ready. I earn a small commission, but your price stays the same.

The Trophy Skin microdermabrasion devices are FDA-registered home versions of diamond peel exfoliation facials available in day spas and medical aesthetic centres. They’re safe for all skin tones and types and suitable for both women and men. You can use them on face, neck, chest, hands or anywhere you need it. Choose different sizes, suction levels and price devices.

The diamond tip exfoliates rough, dead skin and sucks away the debris. It reveals fresh skin and boosts collagen and elastin production. The result is smooth, clear and bright skin.

Ease of use 👍👍👍👍👍
Simple, easy to follow, x2 suction levels. Use a clean filter each session, diamond tips last 6 months to 1 year. Quick and very more-ish satisfaction seeing dead skin gunk in the filter!

Effort 💧
Low effort. Takes 5 to 10 mins just 2 or 3 times per week. Satisfying. For ongoing use.

Results ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Immediate smooth skin. Boosts cell turnover, collagen & elastin build gradually refreshing and brightening. Healthier skin, faded wrinkles and pigmentation over a month or so.

Pros

  • Affordable
  • Easy to use & low weekly effort
  • Durable & intuitive
  • Options for different budgets
  • Immediate smoothing results
  • Gives skincare products easier absorption

Cons

  • Over-zealous use means after-session products can sting!
  • Ongoing cost of tips & filters
  • MiniMD has a short power cable

Ease of use

The microderm devices are decent quality and run on mains power. The dinky MiniMD is a good option if you travel frequently. It has 2 suctions levels and is super-quick to get the hang of. The top-of-the-range MicrodermMD is much larger for ongoing use at home. It has 2 automatic routines, a manual mode and 10 suction levels. The LCD screen guides you through your auto-routines. Both are suitable for beginners.

Pop in a new wool filter for each treatment. And don’t pass over each bit of skin more than 3 times. They’re both very easy to operate, manoeuvre and remember the treatment routines.

The compact, lightweight purse-friendly MiniMD is a perfect intro to home microdermabrasion and travel-friendly too.

The MiniMD does a decent job around your nose with just the standard tip. It’s also ok with suction level 1 where skin is thinner and more delicate, such as under eyes, crow’s feet and lips. But the MicrodermMD has several more suction levels for more bespoke and complete treatment. It also has a pore extraction tip and infusion tip.

There’s a low-pitch whirring from the suction which sounds more earnest on the higher levels. It doesn’t hurt but you can feel it for sure! It’s strangely pleasant and satisfying because of the fine, scratchy sensation from the diamond tip combined with the massaging suction across your skin. Skin’s a bit pink and glowy afterwards from the suction. Product sinks in, but can sting a bit on areas you’ve overdone.

Face gunk. Feel and see it work.

And then there’s the face gunk left over in the wool filter. It’s so deliciously more-ish and satisfying. You can plainly see the work that’s done. Lush.

Effort vs Results

The microderm devices are low effort. Each session takes between 5 to 10 minutes done 2 or 3 times per week. They’re for ongoing use.

Unlike other devices you can see what it’s done after each session. The evidence is on the used filter. And you can feel the difference from the first session. Skin feels softer and smoother and it improves over the next sessions. After a month or so it softens fine lines & wrinkles, fades dark spots, redness and spider veins, and shrinks pores to reveal fresh, bright & smooth skin. Continued use can fade lines and pigmentation even more. And soften scars too.

Our test confirmed these results and found the microderm devices so much more effective than manual scrubs. It’s well worth the 20 to 30 minutes effort per week.

Added bonuses are your skin drinks up your skincare products. And make up glides on and stays put for longer.

The negatives

There’s not much at all to dislike here. As mentioned earlier, if you overdo it some products can sting on your skin afterwards, such as Vit C creams. So, don’t get carried away. It’s also a bit tricky to get the suction to take on your forehead and around your hair line. And the power cable on the MiniMD is quite short. But these are minor things, resolved with practise and a power cable extension.

Ongoing cost of wool filters (left) and diamond tips – more in the full review.

The ongoing cost of replacement diamond tips and filters is worth mentioning too. The filters are good value, but at £25 a pop the cost adds up if you want all the tips and extraction heads. But just one or two is fine. Also, compared to other devices with expensive gels, I think it’s good value for the results they maintain. Learn more about the tips and filters here including how often you need to replace them and what it’s likely to cost you per year.

Microdermabrasion is probably the missing, essential step in your skincare routine. It’s an excellent and affordable place to start if you’re trying to choose your first home beauty device. You get a reassuring 60-day money back guarantee too. So, if you’re ready to buy, please use the links below. I earn a small commission, but your price stays the same.
